Some of the methods he talked about using went across my mind as well: mirroring in the horizontal plane to make sure that both ends really are equals comes to mind.

Yes you could model only a quarter of it and mirror on all axes!

Nice looking pillar. Mirroring will make the modeling much easier and simpler.
