Pan and zoom speed seem are very slow

pan and zoom speed seems to be very slow (can be said negligible). What can i do? I am using a 3 buttoned mouse

Is this happening when you are zoomed in fairly close to your model? Assuming so, give the full stop / period key on your num pad a press.
