Painted orc using 3d coat

I just stared using a software called 3d Coat (about two weeks) and I could not get Blender’s 3d coat app-link to export my model to 3D Coat, so I had to do it manually; but when I tried to send it back to Blender it broke the textures up into separate files. It is taking me too long to figure out how to send things back in one file so I might have to repaint this model in blender…which kind of sucks. anyways here is what it looked like painted in 3D Coat.

I finally got the orc model to export correctly from 3D Coat to Blender; I love 3D Coat, but its recourses are bad, and it takes a lot of time to figure out how to do certain things…or maybe it’s just me.

Not sure what you want to achieve.
Blender has the same functions more or less.
For painting on 3D models, most people will use Substance Painter from Adobe.

Well painted Orc. But it is far better not to be led astray by odd bits of specialised software, most want money non stop, and any free periods are worse than useless as far as I am concerned. Blender can paint stuff and it is far easier than moving files about and different systems.

FedPete: What I want to achieve? At the moment I want to create a game ready 3D model.

Substance Painter is something I would learn if I wanted to become a part of a company (I don’t); I want to create my own game and create most of my own models with no financial motivations; 3D coat has close to the same capabilities as Substance Painter; but I can own it instead of renting it. It can also be used for modeling and sculpting. From what I can see 3D Coat complements Bender with functionality that it lacks; …Thats what I am trying to achieve; what about you?

NP5: Thanks; as far as moving files, after I figured out how to do move them properly, it wasn’t that time consuming (less than a minute) in relationship to the time it took to paint it (over an hour.) the only thing that I can see that blender has over 3D Coat, as far as painting goes, is its smudge tool. But, you are right you can paint in blender; it just takes longer, has far less functionality, and seems to lag at times compared to 3D coat.

  • Sometimes I use Blender vertex paint because it’s easy to use, with no material set-up. But only applicable on high-density vertex models.
  • Sometimes I combine vertex paint with Blender material (textures).
  • Sometimes I create a material setup with multiple Blender paint textures so that I can model paint the diffuse-, roughness-, and/or bump bitmap maps.
  • Sometimes I use the Blender post-processing tools, to change the final render outcome as if we are using Photoshop.

All is possible in Blender; there is no need to switch to another program.
But some programs do have advantages. Painting on multiple texture layers is very easy with Substance Painter. So many tools and each of them has its pros and cons.
But using only one software package has its benefits. It is all integrated.

Have fun!

I love blender; and if I absolutely needed my 2d, 3d, video editing and rendering applications to be in one program package then I would stick with blender and never consider anything else. But personally, I don’t mind switching between different software packages if I can get quicker results without sacrificing quality. And from what I have seen 3D coat has done that (of course I just started using it and my opinion may change.) Note: like substance painter you can paint on layers in 3D Coat using brushes that allows you to select or deselect Color, depth, and glossiness properties on a single brush. I am pretty new to 3D Coat; What is your opinion on it?

I never used 3D Coat. Blender has much to offer.
But yes, other software can be useful.
Many 3D artists use Blender among other tools, because of its mesh editing capabilities.
Personally, I want to learn as much as possible from Blender.
Because it is free and very good alternative to other paid packages.

Yes, the main reason I started using blender is because it is free; I could not afford something like maya or even ZBrush. But if all those other software’s were free, I might not have ever used Blender in the first place.

So, you don’t have any paid add-ons for Blender such as Quad Remesher? Quad Remesher is such an amazing piece of software; I was very happy I purchased it even at its high price tag (around $100.) In fact, Grant uses it in this course. 3D coat has a similar feature to Quad Remesher so that is another thing I like about it. On the other hand, Blender’s (built in) auto retopo isn’t that good especially in character creations. But you can always do it manually in blender; But… 3D coats manual Retop tools are a lot better.

Very nice sculpt. The nipple color looks out of place. I think seaweed color #354A21 would look better. Veins visibility (color and shapes) can be toned down especially on stomach area, unless he’s having liver disease.

Yeah, I noticed both those things also especially the way the nipple color really stands out (but not in a good way.) I was thinking about changing them, but I wasn’t sure if it was needed, but since you brought it up, I will probably change them…thanks for your input.
