Paid Contract Opportunity - making low poly asset packs

We’re looking to find someone to help us create some low-cost 3D asset packs that we can sell / give away to our community (mostly for folks going through our Unity or Unreal courses, so that they have some starting assets to work with). The style would be low poly / stylised and we’d start with a simple environment asset pack (a bunch of trees, rocks, plants, etc - see specifics below) and then move on to make some more detailed asset packs in the future. This would be a paid contact that will hopefully flow on to more contracts on an ongoing basis. Please note that it is not permanent employment, but short-term contract(s). The timeline is flexible and it doesn’t matter which country you are in or what work experience you have - we just want to see that you can deliver good quality assets for us.

We’d love to work with someone who has been through our Blender courses, but that is not absolutely necessary. Please note that we’re looking for someone who is at the intermediate-to-advanced skill level and has some experience working with a client to create good looking 3D art.

Its really, really important that you can show us some low poly art you have created (if you don’t have any, then quickly create some for us to look at!). We’ve looked at a lot of porfolios where people show us high poly photorealistic work which is cool and all but doesn’t help us understand if you can meet the style we’re looking for. If you go to the Unity Asset store and search for low poly (Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making) you’ll see what we mean by “low poly”.

Our primary focus is on creating asset packs with environment models and props but would also like to add characters and animations in the future, so if you have skills in character animation, that is a plus.

As mentioned, we’d like to start with a small nature asset pack first and if that goes well we’ll work on bigger, more complicated asset packs.

Here is what is required for this asset pack contract:

  • 4 types of tree, each with 2 variations (8 total trees)
  • 6 stumps and stick models of various shapes and sizes
  • 20 foliage models of various shapes and sizes (flowers, trees, bushes, grass)
  • 10 rock models of various shapes and sizes
  • 8 large rock wall and/or cliff models (to keep players inside an area)

Here is a reference image to give you context (we don’t want you to copy this exactly, just to use it as a general indication of “low poly” style and size of the work).

As part of the work we would require exclusive rights to own and use the assets. All work must be your own - you must have the rights to use any templates, textures, software, etc that are used to create the assets.

If you are interested, please send a message directly to Rick with the following:

  • Who you are and why you’d be a cool person for us to work with. We’re all about supporting our community so we’d like to know what GameDev.tv courses you’ve participated in and why you’d be a good fit as a partner for us to work with.
  • Where you live and what time zone you are in.
  • Some examples of low poly art that you have personally created. If you don’t have any then no problem, take a day or so to create some!
  • Your proposal for total cost (in US Dollars please) and timeline for creating this first small nature asset pack we’ve outlined above.
  • Any other skills or abilities you think we should know about (eg. graphic design, animation, programming).

I look forward to hearing from you.

You guys are the best, you are not only making some of the best courses but giving job opportunities too! Great! Unfortunately for me, I do not fit the job description since I do not have experience working with clients on 3D modeling, just have a little bit of experience in 2D design and writing, but maybe I’ll give it a shot, don’t know.

@FedPete, @NP5 , anyone you guys have in mind for this?

No idea first I heard of it.

Hi I’m currently working in Blender for another project for a studio. It was part of a Unity 3D Artist Skills Bootcamp I finished remotely last week.

Looking at this, I would be interested. I’m thinking, Bevels, Arrays, Loop Cuts, Subdivisions and general mesh editing practices should be able to do the trick here. Nothing tricky.

As you see below, I tend to look at my meshes in both Solid and Wire Frame Views, to make sure loops and polygon shapes are clean and mess-free. I focus on this approach to all my designs.

Welcome to this site.

Have you done the GameDev Beginners course yet?

First thing I notice in the first image is probable duplicate geometry, most likely from cancelled extrusions.

Hi. Yes, it’s my first time. I do tend to duplicate meshes, by highlighting vertices and edge & face loops. When more tricky designs are needed, such as unique shaped holes and extrusions.

I find that duplicating then separating vertex groups, to work on them individually, is easier for me, and avoids me accidentally skewing and breaking the transformations of the entire model.

I only re-join and re-apply modifiers, once I am satisfied that it all looks right.

Many of the tutorials in blender tend to be difficult to follow steps. The users don’t actually tag their unique shapes.

Here, I’m creating a “frame” for the ‘long-arm’ that connects a drone body to its motor, leg and fan propellers.

The chassis of the body itself is unique, because it has 2x triangle shaped chamfered face loops. Pyramid shapes really. But one side extends, and connects to the ‘long arm’ itself. Because they are connected as “one”, I will eventually Join these sub-meshes.

You can use the main menu > windows > save screenshot.

Please show your work in the “Show” section “Talk” is for introduction and talking about Blender.

Thank you

Can you explain it more?
What do you mean with “Application”.

Sorry it’s for the Paid Contract Opportunity - making low poly asset packs…
