I don’t understand what this is:
I want to know how many faces my character has and I am new to 4.2 v. How do I show the overlays with the amount of faces displayed? + What’s “(190) Scene Collection”?

Overlays dropdown, tick Statistics. They then show top left of the 3d window.
OR right click on the base bar/edging bit and select the things you want displayed.

Users is the view you’re in. Front/back, top/bottom, left/right, camera and user are the views you’ll see here. The next part is projection which can be orthograph or perspective. The number in the parenthesis is the frame you are currently on. Next is the current active collection then the current active object. If it’s an Armature in pose or edit mode it will show the current active bone. @NP5 has already answered the rest of your question. Side note: if you uncheck text under the overlays that information will disappear.
