I started my 3D modeling journey about 2 weeks ago, just as a hobby. I did the infamous right-of-passage donut tutorial first but was practically left feeling more lost and confused than before. I came across Grant Abbitt and his free beginner’s playlist on YouTube with an old man vs. a robot, and I wanted to try a little scene with some minor compositing.
Just decided to share!

Hi, I think we all did the donut tutorial …
But with Grant it’s different. More explaining and gradually upping the difficulty.
Good start!
Maybe a bit too dark on my monitor.
Have fun!

Thank you!
And for sure, I personally love Grant’s teaching style. The slower pace, pausing during periods of the video to catch up, and the more detailed explanation on things has done wonders for me so far. I feel like the donut tutorial is a quick and dirty way to create something really nice looking in Blender and show off to your friends, but as a tutorial for beginners it’s an ocean of information but only an inch deep of detail on each topic/tool.
To each their own though!

nice setup man. 2 monsters, longer road. Red emmission from monster’s eyes is casting over the old man. wonderful. I wish the scene was bit brighter. Monsters are almost invisible

Thanks man! I struggled with the lighting so much.
If I made the world a bit brighter it would lighten the shadows too much for my taste. If I put a rim light in front of the monster in the foreground to create a better detailed silhouette, it would create a noisy light bounce on the ground which I couldn’t fix. The monster in the background I wanted to hide a little more actually, just barely peaking out of the fog but it’s red eyes illuminating through, creating a secondary threat that’s unknown to the old man.
TLDR: I learned that lighting is really, really hard lol. It was good practice though, and my next project I can at least start with some lessons learned already.
