Object vs generated, whats the difference?

As per the title suggests, what is the difference between object and generated on the texture coordinate node? is there a benefit to using one over the other or are they basically the same?

The general rule is try sockets and see what works in the case you have before you. I am sure there is a technical explanation, someone somewhere actually knows.
