UParticleSystemComponent only allows Cascade particle systems, right?
If I wanted to get all fancy and try to add one of the newer explosions provided in the Niagara example templates, would I be right in following the documentation here?

That should be what you want, yes. Be sure to add “Niagara” to your module dependencies in your Build.cs.
