New material vs make unique

At the 9:01 mark, you made the obstacle a new material, does keeping the same material but clicking “Make Unique” lead to the same result? What’s the difference?

As far as I’m aware it would have the same end result.

As materials are a resource and are passed by reference so a single material resource is shared, and changing it affects all the instances of it.

The handy thing with making unique I believe, is if you want that material with a slight tweak, rather than creating the whole material again, you can make it unique and change slightly. This will give it a different reference to it. Or even then save it out as a different resource file.

That’s my understanding of it.
