I started this course over a year ago, and got pretty far originally. But things got in the way and I never finished. I came back to Blender recently and realised that I’ve forgotten everything! 
So, I decided to start again from the Chess Set but using some fragments that I do remember. Here is my subsurf chess set rendered in Cycles:
