Mythical Chess Set - Rook - Yggdrasil

Boom! Back!
So, to be honest, I’m not 100% sure I will be leaving this Rook as a tree. I had another idea for the Rooks ( 4 Tower Shields put together to kind of make a tower), but it felt a bit…not enough… Yet this kind of feels a bit too much…? :joy: (It seems like I can never find the middle, either too much to one side or too much to the other :joy: )

I would like to ask Your opinion tho. Should I leave this, or should I do Tower Shields? Or should I leave this and do Tower Shields for the dark side? Or should I make like a ‘Hangman’s Tree’ version for the dark side? I’m not sure what to do right now :joy:

I did make the pawns smaller, and at least on white side, all of other pieces should fit under the tree…
(Please, do keep in mind, that at the moment I’m not really going for ‘playable/practical’ set. I’m just letting my imagination run free and see what happens :joy: )

Jeez, that tree is GORGEOUS. I love the idea of them as rooks, but maybe as 1/2 size? You’re going to have other detailed pieces that you don’t want overshadowed.

Beautiful!!! Waiting for the remaining pieces!!

I love the tree, also those skeletons are just amazing.

Keep it if you are going for something really flashy, if going after something more realistic, then don’t, I can see myself raging over those rooks not letting me reach my other pieces

Way too big is the key problem and too tall. They should not be out of proportion to the general rules of a chess set. King is tallest etc. While it is a nice object the tower shields wall sounds more in keeping with the sizing issues. Though why Norse mythology now enters the set I am further mystified by lol. Plus there was only one Yggdrasil!

Ahhhh, but the Tree of Life was huge, as there were different folks living in the different areas of Yggdrasil, depending whether they were good, or bad/evil, or rulers/kings.

I did a lot of research on Yggdrasil in college for a paper I had to do for an English literature class. My professor was very much into Norse Mythology, and Yggdrasil was what he assigned to me.

Other than that, it’s beautifully done, but I agree that it’s too large, as the King and Queen should be the 2 tallest pieces in a chess set.

It’s tough to suggest you might want to scrap the tree idea, because those are beautiful trees you made. I agree with the others who say they take up too much space to make a good chess piece. Then again, Yggdrasil might make an interesting take on a king or queen? I’m sure you already have outstanding ideas for you kings and queens, but it’s a thought. Anyway, the trees are very pretty, so at least you’ve got that going on.

I mean, it’s beautiful, you can’t scrap it- maybe make it part of the board instead? as a sort of decoration?
I’ve seen lots of fantasy chess sets that are glass and have intricate scenes underneath them, maybe Yggdrasil could be the board itself?

Don’t listen to them, listen to me :joy: but honestly, listen to yourself. You have a good eye for this stuff!

The tree is awesome! I really love the direction you are taking the chess in. It’s unique, pleasing for the eye, tells cool story.

Now THAT is a fantastic idea. I can almost visualize it, and I think it would make a great board, as you wouldn’t have to create a table for the chess set to sit on. :grinning:
