My thoughts so far (NWUI and beyond)

These courses on Gamedev.tv have been great for me to get back into coding. Just the kind of dip I needed to get motivated again about learning coding and game development. I’ve also enjoyed reading the discussions on here and looking at what other insights people have on the subject matter. There’s definitely a range of skill levels and interests on here. Looking forward to the more complex stuff.

Same here @TruGreer, I haven’t code in like 15 years or so, so it’s nice to refresh with this excercises.

That’s a long time with no coding, but I can sort of relate. I hadn’t done any coding for about 4 years until I found these courses.

I started coding when I was in college using visual basic, for college projects or for fun. Since I graduated I dedicated myself to other things. Now being almost 40 I decided to make my life dream come true, at least in the form of a hobby, and that is to make videogames. As I’m learning here, nowadays there are ton of resources to do so and it seems to be easier now to fulfill that dream

Thanks for sharing that. That’s pretty similar to me (though I’m younger). I did a bit of web development and game programming at university, but I never had the time to go as in-depth as I can now. My dream is also to be a game dev, as both a hobby and career. Glad to know someone else has the same dream!

Take your time to learn (but not too much hehehe) I’m taking this as a very enjoyable challenge, and I’d love to see some creations from a fellow GameDev student. Count me on if you want someone to give you feedback on your games

Thanks. I’m going through the courses fairly quickly since I have the coding foundations down from years ago. It’s just a process of adding to my knowledge. Whatever time I do take, is just to add my own flair to the course projects. Some of these I might consider into making into something sellable too! Well once I finish my learning I suppose…

That’s a nice goal, I hope to get at least a couple of games for Android as well, something fun for my kid to enjoy.

I’m looking at making some mobile games too. The issue is resource management with mobile games, and making teh decision to have games only play on certain levels of hardware. Also touch controls.

Yikes! I’ll be looking forward to that challege hehehe

The resources available make it a bit easier these days, but it’s still a challenge to make mobile games.

At least it should be easier than how it was 15 years ago, I remember those games in Java only for a few “powerful phones”

That was still the same for about 10 years ago too. Smartphones were just into their early stages, and memory reserves, cpu usage were all concerns. I think gpus in phones only juist started to be developed at that time.

You’re right, but since Android became somewhat an standard, I think it became easier to develope apps for it. The OS segmentation was huge then. now we basically have Android / iOS. Altho Segmentation is still an issue for Android du to several different hardware specs between brands

I watched this game dev video released by Unity that talks about mobile development. It deals more with optimisation issues from a programmer’s perspective. Here’s the link to it: https://youtu.be/j4YAY36xjwE

It’s pretty useful, but higher level than what we would mostly deal with.
