I also had lots of issues with the Mirror Modifier, scaling up edge loops and getting oval rather than round, when viewed from above. Kept retrying as it’s all good practise anyway.
To do the crenellations on the rook I used a scaled cube and Boolean Modifier.
Then rotated it three times by 45 degrees to cut out the others.
