I noticed that in the course his plant image is cropped (transparent background) but all the ones that I download from textures.com have a big background on them.
Am I downloading the wrong kind of plant image?

I figured it out! You need to specifically get a transparent image from the site, it will have a checkered background. I feel dumb, I’ll leave this up in case anyone else makes my mistake.
