I feel like my sculpt is looking more and more like an alien and the mouth too feels a bit off but I feel like it’s better to just progress and am eagerly waiting to get to the cat sculpt

It looks really good. I don’t know anything about sculpting, but kinda feel like the lips should be a bit fuller.
Actually I think the lips look like he’s pursed them in order to kiss someone.

Personally, I do not like Rick’s way of putting the references off to the side. I put mine directly in line with the sculpt, front and side, flipping to wireframe where needed to set the basic shapes and positions. What I see as the normal ordinary way. Still, different ways suit different people.
A kissing Alien is coming on well! 
I feel like Rick did that cuz he needs it for reference only and not exact replica, cuz many times like the ear he used it to see the proportions and stuff, but if it was modelling assests or an environment then maybe behind but I think you’re right
