At the moment I like to model crowns, because they are an ideal subject to practise with modifiers and so I
can improve my hardsurface modeling skills…

At the moment I like to model with simply a plane as a start point
- a plane
- subdivide, delete the half, add a mirror modifier
- delete some faces to work on the shape // move some of the vertices, using PET or not
- subsurf
- solidify
- arrange the solidify above the subsurf in the modifier stack
- apply the mirror and the solidify
- add some loopcuts to precise the shape
These approach may be useful for modeling things like forks…
