My game idea

Hello everyone,

In the last live stream, Ben asked us to share our game ideas. I have been pondering this idea for a bit now, and I think this is going to be my direction. Please let me know what you think. All comments and suggestions welcomed.

First, my game is going to be a Final Fantasy meets Vikings. The game will be set in the vikings era, but is not historical. I am thinking that the main character is going to start at level one as usual. He will be naive about the world around him.

The Story
The young viking wants to become a warrior that is allowed to enter the gates to Valhalla. In his journey, he will have to become a great warrior, winning battles and gaining prestige. He will gain friendships with the people in his village, and they will introduce him to new quests and possibly abilities and skills.

The Battle System
I would like this to be turned based. Much like Final Fantasy, BUT not with the complications of all the gems like in FF7. The more battles he wins the more prestige he gains, and the faster he levels. Each level can give new abilities.

This is about as far as I have gone with the development so far.

I like the sound of it but just spitballing here with a slight twist. You are welcome to use or discard it

Rather than working to be able to be accepted into Valhalla how about he has to go into Valhalla and takes on gods and aided by ancestors.

That would give you a little more freedom in enemy design than the more usual human opponents.

Surely gods would be great bosses
But why a viking would want to fight them instead of asking their favor?
Or maybe to get them to help you, you have to fight them to show them the warrior you are?
But it feels like Final Fantasy Geforce, Invocations, Eons…

I do like the idea of him challenging the gods, but I am not sure it would give me more design freedom as the gods are already designed. Unless I stray far from the traditional gods. I feel that might be a little more risk than I am prepared at this point. [quote=“David_Sarre, post:3, topic:20203”]

I have toyed with this idea already. I might have a god or two come down and give the character advanced quests.

Yes, I can see that. The early Final Fantasy games are my all time favorites. Classics I played countless hours, and replays over and over just cause I could. Definitely my inspiration.

When writing that I was kind of thinking along the lines God of War and the progression of Kratos. The Gods cross him/do something and he is out to get revenge/defy the gods.

Tim, I agree the Gods have been defined in mythology but it doesn’t prevent creative freedom in the way they are portrayed.

Or, with the guidance of Odin you could be fighting in the events of Ragnarök.

Good points. I suppose they do not have to be gods of Asgard too. I could bring in frost giants, and some of the other enemies of Asgard. I will have to give this more thought. Thanks for the clarification.
