My First Blender Project

Hey everyone! Thank you very much for this course, it helped me to quench the thirst for 3d modelling I had for years. I’m learning Blender to be able to create my own game assets for a project I’ve had in mind for 2 years now. I know I have a long way to go but until then I wanted to share my first 3d model.

tldr - Below I’m explaining how I got to create this

So I started doing the ramp model in the course and then thought, what would happen if I make a sphere slide down the ramp, so I kind of paused the tutorial and created a sphere, then looked online for blender physics and it worked. Then I wondered if I could create some spikes in the ramp so it will be like a plinko style game. Did that, and got bored fast, then I wanted to make a spherical shape for the ball to fall into, like a bowl, so I looked into how to make that. Fooled around with subdivisions (new to me in blender) and colors (transparency), failed at texturing to be honest, i still don’t know how to work with those yet but i managed to learn a lot about blender’s shaders.
At this point I saw in the sphere’s physics there was a “cloth” option. So I was curious but I failed at that too, couldn’t make it work. Watched a couple of tutorials, and Voila! managed to create my first 3d model rendered in blender. I know it’s a simple one but I was so impressed of how it came out (as being the first ever rendered thing I did) that I wanted to share it with you guys.

Now, I’m sharing this process with you to emphasize something else: the journey to this rendered … thing  I loved it. I know it’s simple thing but please understand I’m not an artist or designer or… talented. But through this course and these tools we have at our disposal nowadays I managed to create something and I’m really proud. Failed a lot and it took more hours than it should’ve, but the journey here was exciting and informative. Now I know I can make all my asset placeholders at least, and share the story I’ve been building so far, with the world. I look forward to that but there’s a lot more I need to learn so I’m going back to the ramp tutorial

Again, thank all of you for your dedication and love for what you do! This means a lot to me. here’s the model

Well, you took quite a detour, just like I have, unless I tried stick with things I know and don’t go for things I don’t. It’s quite inefficient you know. In this tutorial you get a lot of things explained step by step, so you just learn and don’t stare confused on things and fail. It will be much more easier to comprehend everything else you wish to know after you complete this course, I made it to the middle of section 5 and it was nothing less than perfect so far.
Anyway, here is the stuff I been doing along the way
Love those vases btw, they look really professionally made.

Yeah I agree with you, I am going back and continuing the course of course. But curiosity also teaches is what I was trying to say. And it didn’t feel like I was wasting my time, on the contrary, it is that problem solving challenge that is exciting to solve. I wanted to go ahead much more (texturing the cloths and so on) but that was way beyond me so I’ll go back and follow along the course. I’m on section 2 but catching up fast

I like your models, from ship to cheese. Now you made me curious how to make that sea and skyline.
Keep up the good work, maybe we can share our works once we’re done with the course and compare with our first models.

Sea and skyline were simple enough, I just enabled “import images as planes” plugin and rendered with blender renderer. Quite a miracle how well it worked. I couldn’t get them to work in cycles though, even worst, I tried 2 tutorials and still didn’t get them to work, part of reason why I don’t like random tutorials and chose to follow this course.

There is little sense in comparing them I found, some things take a lot of effort and look poorly, others simpler and look great. And it depends on how much time you invested in particular model too.
I do save everything I made so far, love looking on those models, I think I’ll print them and make a gallery for myself when I will be a successful 3D artist.
