My first attempt at Pixel art 0.0

And just to add I’ve finished the borders for the final “launch” zone. These were a bit tricky, but I wanted to add a bit of humour to them after the darker previous one. I thought like the Tetris game on the GameBoy, I’d add a sprite rocket "launching"when you beat the game, (or “break out” ;)) So I wanted it to end in a hanger.

Nearly there! :triumph:

@_JJ, these are looking absolutely brilliant Jon - well done. You have a real talent there, these new backgrounds are fab.

Definitely an air of nostalgia here

Thanks Rob! It’s been a pretty steep learning curve, but being able to share and get feedback on my experiments has really helped a lot to build my confidence and keep up the momentum when I’m looking at a 64x64 area zoomed out and thinking “yay. I made a blob”, so thank you so much for your time again! I don’t know about a talent, more a misspent child hood… I mean urm “decades of research”

I’m quite looking forward to making a platform game now

This has also helped to feel like I might actually be able to do the Blender course next. That was my goal once this first Unity course is done - do the blender, then the physics course. I was really nervous about blender because, well… art and drawing are not strong suits lol, but this was really hard when I started out last week - a simple box took me hours - but I’ve gone from hopeless to rookie just by hardwork, so feeling like slow and steady and I might actually be able to make textures eventually.

That said, absolutely no part of me wants to be a games artwork guy lol, but it does mean I might be able to share some simple games I make one day

lol… well it’s working for you now

that would be pretty cool as I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else share any of those yet

That doesn’t come across Jon, you can see a few revisions here obviously when you scroll up but I think you have a lot more ability and creativity than you give yourself credit for, your perseverance certainly has paid off.

it does mean I might be able to share some simple games I make one day

Hoping you will share them here for us to see as they develop, I think it’s really beneficial for all of the students to be able to see what other people are doing, if they are experiencing some difficulties that’s beneficial too because they won’t feel they are on their own with something they are also finding tricky - and, like your backgrounds above, when you see something really cool I believe it inspires you to strive to achieve the best you can also…

Always happy to play test and offer some thoughts/feedback…

Just for anyone who may stumble upon this in the future, and maybe find the various iterations helpful, I did go back to my first level now that I understood the pixel design a bit better and added some detail to it, so it fits in better with the rest of the game.

Finally, it is time to start coding this tomorrow

Awesome!

I really like seeing the evolution of your pixel art as you continue to develop new levels and take in feedback. Superb!

Are you planning to release the sprites?

Thanks Kimset

Hi @amrojjeh, sorry for the delay, Sadly I was afflicted by man-flu, and have now been trying to catch up on things and haven’t even had time to work on coding my game lol

Urm, to be honest I hadn’t really thought about the nightmare of licensing things online. I really just want this to be an inspiration/motivation to people who may be finding it a little hard like I did to keep going. I’m not really sure how the ownership and restrictions work for things posted on this site, and honestly, I’m not motivated to look into that. My wishes are that people take the images as inspiration to make their own images, not just copy and paste them into their projects. That said, my wife is an artist and I know that even Getty images now steal images online and claim ownership of them, so… as a free software guy, the GPL seems to cover my wishes - people can DL the images, change them as they like, use them in paid projects if they like, but you can’t claim to own it and sue other people for using or deriving from them. Basically help the next dev up, don’t climb the ladder then take it with you lol.

Alright then, but I have a question, What did you use to make the pixel art? (im TERRIBLE at art even pixel art)

…the worst of all the flues… you are with your brothers here @_JJ, we will support you through this troubling time and appreciate the difficulties, unlike those females who mock our man-flu!

I really like that, the concept I’m obviously familiar with, but I like the phrase!

I used GIMP because it’s free.

There’s a few youtubes, basically it comes down to working with the pencil tool very much zoomed in then resizing the image several times larger. I’ll make a blog post I think and link it back here because it’ll get a bit out of hand. I don’t actually have a blog, so give me a week lol!

That would be cool!

Pretty awesome @_JJ ! You inspire me to give this a try. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to playing the game when it is finished.

Update on blog!

So I had never hosted a website or a blog before and it took a lot longer than expected to get my head around all that stuff… plus it was kind of playing second fiddle to actually continuing with the course lol!
I will still be making this guide my first post on my blog when it comes up - ever so nearly there

Is the blog up yet? Oh ya, I heard blogger is a good tool to use to make blogs. It is also made by google.
