I’ve been messing a lot with the sprites. I think the explosion effect turned out really good. I wasn’t expecting it to be as solid as it is.

Instead of star particles I did little floating meteors. I think some of the colors might be a little too distracting but I don’t know if they show up in the gif. Some really bright blues and greens so I’ll probably end up changing those near the end.
