Here is my chess scene, that I could do for your suggestions.
I textured my chess board but somehow I liked non textured Chess Board and so am presenting the same.
I have kept the background open for now, as I feel this chess set needs to be put in a photorealistic environment. I would set this chess - set in one such scene once I will start learning from the Environment program after I finish this course.
The board has far too sharp edges. Real life never has the perfection of perfect pointy edges and the all need edge bevelling.
The wood grain is not realistic either. Consider the probable construction method. Even were is made out of one deep hunk of wood such that the grail all went one way, you have vertical grain on 12 sided and horizontal on the others. The general lack of end grain textures is a bane. But if constructed of 4 mitred strips with the grain running the usual direction along the edge it would all work out correct looking.
Camera shots all very square on, not ideal display.
I do like the board being on short legs, not often seen style of board.
I know that the wood is not in proper shape. The first thing missing in the wood is that it is yet a texture that needs to be mapped for Normal and Rough with respective images. To bring it in proper shape, it needs UV mapping too. I could have done it as I know in bits and pieces working along these nodes, but have saved it to learn methodologically hoping they will be covered in next exercises.
As long as perfect pointy edges and short legs goes in this model, I had deliberately left the top and bottom edges and beveled the middle one. I faintly remembered one such table that I had seen in some museum, most probably associated with some Mughal King. But as a viewer your opinion counts much to me, and I will bevel both of the edges slightly to give it a rounded look.
Camera is my Achilles heel. I need to work on it more. I will do it certainly, and I hope by the end of this course I will be able to control and use them properly.
I will share the final one once I will place this Board in the photorealistic environment.
