My Bishop (Issues with Boolean modifier)

I had some trouble with the boolean modifier. If I positioned my notch at certain places, the modifier didn’t seem to cut out my notch. I googled a bit and found this: https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/7480/why-doesnt-the-boolean-modifier-work-for-me

I didn’t try the solution suggested in the post. Instead I just moved my notch until the modifier worked. Are there some tips for using the boolean modifier to avoid this problem?

Make sure what you’re using to cut out of the mesh doesn’t have any gaps in it, and also make sure it is on ‘Carve’ not ‘BMesh’ on the boolean modifier
