Took a quick break and drew some axes!
I might have gone to light on my pen pressure (and I lowered opacity this time too), so this is version with contrast bumped:
I took 10th axe to do overdraw:
and as this was too much fun I tried some shading:

With shading, you need to think where your virtual lamp is standing.
Draw in first the ambient occlusion parts softly.

Yes, same principles are in place. How every, it became pure handywork now … nothing automated fanciness 
So drawing 2D helps to understand what to look for in 3D art.
