Multi-Resolution Modifier

Hello, I’m trying to troubleshoot what’s causing these anomalies that occur during when using the Multi-Resolution modifier. Once I get to the fourth subdivision I’m starting to notice the mesh inherits an issue. I’ve tried smoothing vertices in the topology, which helped slightly in a few spots. But, I’m still having a difficult time with the brow area. During the lesson, Grant mentioned that replacing the multi-res modifier can fix some of this. These are occurring post fix.

My initial thoughts are:

My topology is too messy and dense
Too many topology loops in a small area
The multi-res modifier needs adjusting
I went too detailed too early

Is there a simple fix?
I plan to do a second run through of the course. Do you have recommendations on how to avoid this from happening again?

Thank you!

Below is with the shrinkwrap using ‘surface nearest’ instead of projection.

!! edit: I forgot to mention I increased the scale of the head at one point before it was all merged and caused some issues with the point of symmetry. I feel like it got it to a workable point, maybe that is what caused my issue?

Hi. I like your stylised orc model. It looks cool.

In terms of the modifier (and lots of modifiers) it is always a good idea to apply scale. I’ve found that it can have an impact on how they work if you don’t. Have you got a saved version from before applying the modifier? Maybe revert to it, and reapply the modifiers.

Hi RW4P, thanks for the suggestion. I took your advice and tested things on an earlier save. I made sure the scale and transforms were applied before joining the head to the body.
I took my latest saves’ retopo mesh and imported it to my test. I got it situated and everything looked fine.

I guess somewhere along the road I may have forgotten to apply transforms and it messed with my line of symmetry?

Hi. I’m going through the same part of the course as you are I think. I’ve encountered the same issue as you, this evening. It seems that mirror and multi-resolution modifiers don’t play nicely together.

When the mirror modifier is applied on objects with multi-resolution modifiers, it causes the strange artifacts (blocks and strange polygons).

I found that if you apply the mirror before adding the multi-resolution, it worked okay. I’ve not found a way to fix it otherwise. Other people might know a better work around.

Oh, good call! I just tried that and its nice and smooth now

I too am interested to know if there’s a more optimal fix for this.
