The stencil method was awkward at first but I ended up really loving it! I even used an elephant skin stencil on the human part

Skin on the leg and the head might be a bit to shiny? In my mind the skin of elephant is quite rough and dry…

Yes, it has a huge learning curve. One of my current goals is to have more grip on this subject. Making your own stencils and brushes. Most people go to substance, but Blender does the same but it takes more knowledge and actions. Substance only takes the UI pain away. And works faster, but learn less.
