Mesh jumped around upon unparenting

When I unparented the mesh from the lamp rig armature after joining all parts of the lamp into one object, the mesh jumped in location drastically as shown in the accompanying screenshot.

That happens when you move objects after parenting them and then un-parent. You can stop it by clicking the “Keep Transform” option on the un-parent menu (Alt+P).
