this happens to me in every sculpt. not only on this course but it seems to happen every single time i use blender. can anyone tell me what im doing wrong? in this case ive followed exactly what Grant has done.

First thing to check is all the normals are facing outwards.
Then check for holes in the mesh too.
Double geometry also worth a merge by distance check.
If it does turn out to be what NP5 is suggesting, this might help to explain why:
The 3D Print add on can fix geometries, holes, non-manifold meshes, etc. It’s part of blender, and needs to be enabled.
