Manual retopology

I went for the manual retopology too. Not quite symmetrical, because I had already applied the mirror modifier and my ogre is slightly assymetrical. The head took some time and thinking, but I am quite pleased with it. Any tips?

Try to smooth the mesh so that you have square faces. Not rectangles!
Add more loops (details) on the parts which bends. Like knees, elbows.
Not so important if the model is static, but later on you can let the Orc dance …

When you try to improve the mesh, use a new fresh copy!

Thanks for the advise.

When you say start with a fresh copy, do you mean a non - retopologised copy? So starting over from scratch?

I’m not exactly sure what @FedPete means by a fresh copy, but I would take it to mean you should make a copy of what you have here, and continue working on the “new” copy, using “it” as a starting point for future improvements or additions to the current mesh.

That way you could always come back to this original copy if the improvements or additions you make on the new copy aren’t quite what you want. It’s better than having to start over from scratch.
