🎤 LOTS_OF_PYRO – Building a Concert From Scratch in 3D

Hey everyone! I’m a bit of a gearhead when it comes to the music industry, something that naturally comes from working as a roadie in live event production.

Outside of that, I’m always exploring new forms of art. I run a media business focused mainly on video production and editing , and since early 2025, I’ve been pushing myself to blend that passion with a new one: 3D modelling and digital concert design .

:clapper_board: Project: Build A Concert From Scratch

My current project is a complete 3D recreation of a concert environment, using Blender and Unreal Engine . Here’s what I’ve been building so far and looking for further tips and tricks for the following:

:wrench: Performance Infrastructure

  • Stage Decking – Modular 4’x4’ & 4’x8’ panels with 1’, 2’, and 4’ adjustable legs
  • Stage Trussing – Connectable truss sections (2’, 4’, 8’, 10’) for scalable structures
  • Stage Lighting – Moving heads, LED bars, PAR cans—each modelled for realism
  • Mixers & Interfaces – Audio, video, and lighting boards for realistic FOH setups
  • Roadcases – Various sizes for realistic transport and stage logistics
  • Special FX – Lasers, fog machines, and pyrotechnics in development

These components are polygon-heavy and processor-intensive , but essential for the immersive realism I’m going for.

:guitar: Musical Instruments & Accessories

The core of this project is bringing to life all the instruments and accessories from various rock/metal eras. I’m creating everything modularly, with realistic physics and genre-accurate aesthetics.

:light_bulb: Seeking Modelling Guidance

One of the biggest parts of this journey is learning how to properly model each instrument, from body shape and fretboards , to hardware placement , textures , and animations for performance realism.

My attempt to build a Modular Stage with Stage Trussing within Blender

:wrench: If you have tips, references, or best practices for modelling any of the listed gear, guitars, drums, synths, amps, or pedals, I’d greatly appreciate your insight . Whether it’s scaling for real-world proportions, rigging for animations, or breaking down mesh topology for modular design, I’m open to learning everything I can.

This is all part of a long-term vision for interactive animation , game-ready assets , and possibly a VR experience down the line.

:t_shirt: Inspired Wardrobe & Instrument Modeling

The bands don’t just inspire the sound—they’re crucial for how I design 3D musicians , stage layouts, and styling . Character wardrobe and Performance rigs are influenced by:

  • Glam Metal – Spandex, studs, glam makeup (Mötley CrĂĽe, Poison)
  • Thrash – Denim, patches, leather (Slayer, Megadeth)
  • Shock Rock – Face paint, horror elements (Alice Cooper, KISS)
  • Black/Death Metal – Corpse paint, dark leather (Mayhem, Immortal)
  • Prog/Symphonic – Theatrical coats and stage gear (Nightwish, Dream Theatre)
  • Nu Metal – Jumpsuits, streetwear, masks (Slipknot, Korn)

Each character will also be holding accurately modelled instruments matching their genre, pose, and playing style.

:guitar: Copyright & Reference Use

All brands and instruments listed are used for reference and educational purposes only. I fully understand copyright laws and the use of trademarks. These models are non-commercial recreations and tributes for art, animation, and design study. Should a Commercial License be Required, this will be discussed at a later time.

:musical_notes: Musical Influence

This entire project is powered by my love for '70s–'90s rock and metal , with inspiration from the Periodic Table of Metal and bands such as:

  • Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax
  • Black Sabbath, Dio, Motörhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS
  • Def Leppard, Mötley CrĂĽe, Poison, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister
  • Rush, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Dream Theatre, Opeth, Nightwish, Symphony X, Sepultura
  • Slipknot, Korn, System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park
  • Bathory, Mayhem, Emperor, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel

Their stage presence, fashion, and gear are the blueprint for everything I’m creating.

If you’re into modelling, game dev, music, VR, or performance simulation —I’d love to hear from you! Whether you’re a pro or a hobbyist, your feedback, techniques, or even resource links could help elevate this to the next level.

Not long ago I made drumset for a Collab: 2024 Collab: Week 52 “My favorite present” - VOTE CLOSED - #8 by Megane_Wang

It was done one part at a time. I must say I had assembled and assembled one dozens of times, so I mostly only needed to re-check the size references .

I used reference images of floorplans and dimension graphs to get the diameters and heights “right”, though these are a bit to each drummer’s taste.

Definitely a nice project!

Wow! That’s spectacular!

The Last time I built a Drum Set was in Creative Mode on Minecraft :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The main reason I opted for the Guitars first is due to the amount of Curvature withing the connections between Head/Nec/Body of a Guitar.

A friend of mine suggested I use “Instances” to clean up all the Polygon Count, especially for the Stage/Truss.

Got any good tips on which parts to start with when it comes to the Shapes/Sizes/Measurements?
I noticed when I changed Units to Imperial that Blender was a bit “Unhappy” and didn’t want to align much together for me.

I had issues with measurements, even though it you want a piece like a bar to be of a specific size you can just set it in the object’s properties (I used that for the drumset after a few experiments), though I usually prefer to use the units as blender wishes and then work around them (which usually means getting huge chairs and tables, and powering yo the lighting to a thousand suns - yes, I know you can scale the whole thing later on).

I can only guess you used the Array modifier for those repeated pieces, did you? For individual parts I usually make a set (e.g. wing nuts, legs) and re-use the objects, so if I decide to update their shape it does not take a lot of work to update every single instance.
In objects such as those drums, working on them without tilt is way better, so each tilted piece is linked to an “Empty” set of axes to be able to rotate them independently of working on the object, and experiment with them as much as needed without breaking anything (it was like setting up the actual set, indeed ).
