I don’t know if there is a best practice for the empties position relative to the objects that is grouping, but I’ve included a couple pictures. I included renders of the state.

I think the empties are fine. In the end so long as you know where they are anywhere will do. Somewhere obvious though can be helpful should you ever be working with others on a project. Naming the empties will help find the right one too in the outliner.

It depends also what the function will be for the empty.
- Just a placeholder to group and move items
- Or the rotation of the objects connected empty, when the empty is rotated.
- Or you want to preserve the rotation or mirror point of the object.
So many usages. You will learn this by practice. I use them a lot.
