Learning of Unity [please suggest me a learning path]

,

Hello everyone
I am very new to this community. I am a .NET developer - I started my career with web based application development using C# . Now for my official purposes I need to learn game development specially mobile game and AR, VR games.

  • What are the suitable learning path for me to learn unity step by step from beginner to pro?

  • How much learning curve involve with learning unity game development?

  • I know different peoples needed different amount of learning time therefore please give me a minimum usual time can require for learning unity for a stable level from where one can develop a game.

  • Since learning anything takes time, effort and money so after learning Unity, what are some different ways to make money outside of job?

Thanks in advance

Hi blueocean,

Welcome to our community!

  • What are the suitable learning path for me to learn unity step by step from beginner to pro?

From what I understood, you are already experienced in programming. You know C#, and you know what a framework is. Usually, we recommend to start with our ‘Complete C# Unity Game Developer 2D Online Course’ and ‘Complete C# Unity Game Developer 3D Online Course’ because most people are beginners in programming.

However, since you are already experienced in programming, I would suggest to give Nathan Farrer’s ‘Unity Mobile C# Developer Course’ a try. If you notice that it is too difficult, you could either watch a few Youtube tutorials to become familiar with the Unity engine, or you could enrol in the aforementioned ‘Complete C# Unity Game Developer * Online Courses’.

Decide yourself what you want to do because you know best what worked for you in the past, and what might work next.

  • How much learning curve involve with learning unity game development?

It depends on your goals. If you are experienced in programming and C#, you already know a lot compared to most of our new students.

  • I know different peoples needed different amount of learning time therefore please give me a minimum usual time can require for learning unity for a stable level from where one can develop a game.

I’m afraid we do not have any statistics. Given you watch all videos of a course, you could do some maths to figure out how long it takes to complete a course if you do not make the game yourself. Bear in mind that you also need sleep and food.

What do you mean by that? Earning money with games? From what I know, there are some game developers who get financially supported by fans on the internet. A popular website would be Pateron. There are also game developers who release their games for free, and people support them while they are developing more content. Others create little games and publish them, for example, on itch.io.

If you want to know more about how to earn money, I would suggest to join another forum, for example, reddit, because GameDev.tv cannot give you any financial advice. On reddit, there are multiple subreddits on game development, and there are also lots of people discussing how to earn money with games.

I hope this helped.

Hi Nina
Thank you for your details clear reply.

I was talked about money making because each efforts demands some rewards- from that point of view. And thank you for your detailed reply.

Well, if money is the only relevant reward for you, the journey might become difficult because there are literally tens of thousands of game developers who want to earn money too. They too are looking for an easy way to earn money. However, the truth is that you need at least a good idea and people who are interested in your game. Then you’ll perhaps be able to earn a few dollars. Do some research on itch.io to see what I mean.

For an actual financial success, though, you will also need a lot of luck. Personally, I wouldn’t count on luck because game development can be fairly exhausting, and having to rely on luck is not that motivating when developing a game takes longer than a day or two.

But that’s just my opinion.

Please feel free to ask our helpful community of students for further advice and opinions over on our Discord chat server, too.
