I found using layers to be both powerful and time saving. While working on one layer at a time it keeps me from making a mistake with other objects. With and accidental click, or what have you. Plus having the place holders in the scene with all layers showing. Allows me to set the scene up just like the picture I have drawn. With layers it seem to have tons of benefits with very little draw backs.
