Hi there,
it’s been a while that worked in blender, but I want to show you a piece I created last year.
I don’t have a proper name for such a creature, I call her kraken mermaid. Obviously inspired by Ursula, the sea witch in Arielle.
I took some of the great courses here last year, and halfway through with the geonodes course I felt like starting this new project, which I had thought about before, but didn’t dare to start it then.
Her body is sculpted, with multires, following the approach in the dragon sculpting course. The texture of the human part is painted (a little bit), that of the kraken part is procedural. And, since I was halfway through the geonodes course, of course I wanted to use those as well: The suckers of her kraken arms (I learned that I shouldn’t call them tentacles) are placed as instances on curves placed into the arms, and then converted to mesh for rigging.
The hair is based on the geometry nodes hair tool. I combed it to different directions and then set up geonodes to mimic shape keys, as in the anime character course, to animate the hair. Don’t know, whether this is a good approach, but after a couple of days watching youtube videos and experimenting, it was the only thing that worked for me. I definitely want to learn the blender physics course, that sounds quite helpful.
Some more renders:
And, if you’d like to see more (and a video with her, at the bottom of the page), here my new website:

What do you think? I feel like I should have used more and shorter bones for the kraken arms. But it was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed this project.
Thank you very much to Grant, Rick and Stephen, your courses are great!
