Is there a way to preload the course content for offline use?

I am going on a 25 day cruise to Australia (don’t be jealous!) and will be spending 5 days in Australia before coming back.

Even though Princess is giving me free WI-Fi, I am told that it is pretty bad unless you are in a port and I don’t think they will have the new StarLink setup for the ship by the time we leave.

With only 8 of the 25 days in ports I was hoping to work on my courses while at sea. When in the ports I hope to be busy snorkeling, scuba diving, etc. and not working on the courses for those days.

Any chance there is a way to download the course content for offline use in case I need it?

The lessons on Udemy can be downloaded to a device to be watched offline.

If you’re not familiar, the GameDev.tv lessons can be migrated to Udemy, or vice-versa.

Once you’re on the Udemy site, you’ll have two choices: To DL to a computer or to DL to a mobile device.

The instructions for downloading can be found here. There is also a link at this site for instructions on how to DL to a mobile device.

Here is a snap of what it looks like on mobile. You can see I’m downloading the “Welcome…” lesson using the Udemy mobile app. I think all lessons can be downloaded to mobile devices.

IMPORTANT! Not all courses can be downloaded to a computer! If it is possible, the settings cog in the lower right of the lesson is the place to find the DL request activity.

Your best bet would probably be to DL the lessons to an iPad or a phone, as they may not be downloadable to an actual computer. That said, you can definitely take your lessons with you in one form or another.

I hope this helps

I have been downloading to my phone, but it seems to keep getting stuck, acting like it is downloading yet not doing any work for hours or even more than a day. I had better luck sometimes manually choosing each lesson one at a time. This is over my home Wi-Fi, so not a cell network issue.

Looks like the app needs work in handling network communications errors, but I have 3 classes downloaded and more in progress. Should keep me busy.

I have this same type of problem when my phone is not connected to WiFi, so my first thought was that maybe you weren’t connected to WiFi. This probably wouldn’t work well over a regular cellular signal because of the large file sizes. My phone does the exact same thing when it is not on WiFi.

You already mentioned that you are using WiFi and not a cell signal so that answers my first guess.

I’m not sure if it is possible to download the entire course as a batch operation. I’ve always done one or two lessons as needed. If that is working for you, I’d say keep going that route.

Do you think it might have something to do with the amount of storage on your device? These video files probably take up a lot of space.

I don’t know what type of mobile device you’re using. To the best of my knowledge, Apple devices like an iPad don’t allow for an external micro SD card, but many Android devices have a space for a micro SD card.

I wonder if it is a storage issue and maybe a micro SD card could help? It’s just an idea.

I hope the rest of your trip has been going well!

Cheers!
