Is Blender 4.5 slower?

Hi,

I’m using an old machine to render with Blender.
But with version 4.5 I experience some slowness when working with Blender.
Maybe it’s the new Vulcan support.

  • First time adding a new material, Blender frozes completely
  • The same for switching to viewport shading. The first time I did this, my object where gone, only outline visible.

Maybe the system now loads features when you are gong to use it, which takes some time on my slow machine. Maybe the reason that switching over to a feature. Blender has low responsiveness.

Any one else experience strange behavior?

I’ve seen people reporting similar issues elsewhere, so there’s probably something going on with Vulkan. I haven’t had the time to test it myself, though.

By default vulcan is not turned on in 4.5. If you’re still using OpenGL(The default) the Shader compiler can take awhile when it first loads up. It is also known to hang up the computer until it finishes. This can usually be fixed by adjusting the threads. Ctrl+comma->System->Memory & Limits->Threads->Usually half of the number of cores your system has works well. Sometimes you will need to set it lower. The higher the number the more RAM that is needed which can lead to paging which slows the system down. If you have plenty of RAM then you may want to set it to subprocesses which is faster, but uses more RAM. Another option is to goto the Display Graphics panel that is above the Memory & Limits panel and change from OpenGL to Vulcan. That is as long as you have a GPU that support Vulcan. Which ever method you choose you will need to close Blender and restart for the changes to take effect. The first time you run Blender after making the changes it will sometimes need to setup the Kernal which takes sometime, but won’t need to run again unless you change your setting.

That is good information!

I was on Open GL, now switched on Vulcan.
And got speed increase. Mostly I’m using a time limit on on my renders and for a 1 minute render I got:

  • Open GL 34 samples
  • Vulcan 51 samples

The info about trheads I didn’t know, it seam logical for low RAM.
Unfortunately my threads can not be activated in preferences, probably I got one thread available.

Threads is only available with OpenGL. Most processors(CPU) have 2 Threads per core. So a quad core usually has 8 threads. Some cheap laptop versions will only have 1 thread per core.

Working on a new project with 4.5.
But I decided to go back to version 4.3, because everything in Blender 4.5 is so slow on my machine. From opening panels, to editing the simple cube. It’s unpleasant UI response/feedback.

Just my experiences, using an old machine.

For me, i have problems with Elastic Grab and those type of sculpt brushes, they are really slow, comparing to 4.3 i am using at the moment. Like, really really slow. Shame. I will wait new updates, and who knows if they will fix it. Other stuff is definitely better with Vulcan on decent PC.
