I didn’t make a separate object on my tank top for the gun should I go back and make it a separate object or will it not change anything?

From what I recall I do not think the tank top gets used on anything else so probably no harm in it not being separate object. If it is, you can always make it a separate object by selecting all the relevant verts and pressing P, (for seParate) ‘by selection’. Then they become a separate object.
