Intro to empties Challenge and a problem i encountred

So using empties this is what i ended up with…

Is it because i tried to do my collections afterwards, cause when i am trying to use collections i end up with a mess. Look at this picture…

My Black pawns with linked empty end up in the collection, but they also reappear on one more spot (look at the outliner). So should one always do collections first or is it something im missing/doingwrong?

Fiddling about finally got me collections and all looks nice and works in ViewLayer, but in scenes i cant click on collections…

Collections and empties are two different things.
You can group items, yes!
But empties are more logical.
Collections more visual arrangements. Like I want all red objects in one collection.
Or I use the empty to rotate all the child objects.
