Inset not Extrude

There’s a point in this video where Mike says to Extrude by 0 to create a scale-able edge loop. I believe he meant inset by 0 however. Just info for anyone having difficulties.

If this is the part of the video that I think it is, he says extrude (E) by 0 and then scale (S) to size the edge loop. Both inset (I) and extrude (E) work, but only if you are using an edge loop that has a face. If the edge loop has no face on top, only extrude will work.

Hey guys,

A timestamp might help out a little here to clarify for Kevin (I hate referring to “the student” its so generic!).
It may be a case some students are making the model slightly differently to Michael and if it re-occurs i like to see if the video can be improved to help with the overall learning.

If you guys could provide some feedback on this i would be grateful

Of course. I’m refering to Section 4, Lecture 80 at 6 mins and 10 sec.

My mistake, perhaps I was doing something wrong, but I could only get it to work as expected using inset rather than extrude.

Thanks for the tips concerning inset by 0. I too could not get the desired results using extrude alone - I tried step by step, but my blender appeared to not work exactly as it does in the video. I am on a mac using Blender 2.79. So I followed the suggestion above, first did an inset of 0, then selected & scaled the (outer?) edge loop, then extruded the inner square along Z axis. There was no top/upper face on the inner square to delete.
