I discovered something and thought I'd share

If you move your pillar up with geometry nodes, you can have its origin at its base for easy snapping, without applying the mirror modifier. (edited for clarity)

Great, you can do this also using basic shape keys.

Or just move the mesh up.

My original message was poorly worded. I was talking about moving the origin to the bottom of the mesh without using an empty for the mirror point of the mirror modifier. I don’t know how useful it is, but someone may have a use case for it.

When I tried to use shape keys, I couldn’t figure out a way to get the geometry to cross the mirror point. So I’ll assume that you were just talking about moving up editable geometry.
