So it’s not shaded smooth and I can’t figure out what else I might have done. I don’t think it’s the material

First thing I would do is get rid of the colouring, stick to the standard grey. It is just easier to rule out rendering issues of some sort then.

Also include the lecture time that is relevant to the problem/issue.
This can be done by Blender itself, via the ‘Window’ menu bar top left hand side. On that menu drop down is ‘save screenshot’.

Yeah I don’t remember which lecture it happened in but it appears to have cleared up after I beveled all the stairs. I definitely don’t know which panels to have open or what I could check.
