When I try to duplicate by pressing Shift d, it just makes a circle in the cube.
I would try to reinstall blender and make sure you keep the default settings.
It could be that yesterdays daily build was buggy and todays is better.
Please update me and if you can provide a screenshot of your blender UI using the the view menu and save screenshot.
You can upload the image here using the hardrive with an arrow icon above the reply window.
Are you in EDIT mode or OBJECT mode. Or even in a different modus?
