How would you analyse your game?

What type of data would you like to capture about your users gameplay?

A few things I’m putting in my analytics:

  • Level starts and completions
  • Language changes
  • Total play time on exit
  • Repeat plays
  • electing to view rewarded ad

I think gameplay tracking is great for balancing the difficulty curve in the game.

I also think that understanding the country players are in is really important, especially when you game hasn’t been localised for that market. If I saw players trying it from different countries then I’d certainly make an effort to get the game localised to try and boost sales.

Knowing the age of the players is interesting, since the segment you originally build your game for may not be the one you end up with. This could lead to a better understanding of what those players are after and potentially influence future games.

The idea of offering in-app purchases tends to make my stomach turn and I really hate that whales are a thing we should care about when making a game. I’m really not a fan of the FTP model that exploits users with constant “offers” and encouraging plays to “pay to win”. In my opinion, games should be fun and just simple Skinner boxes designed to extract money from people.
