How hard is UV un-wrapping?

Why can’t you select all the edges and mark them as seams, then everything would be un-wrapped with no stretching???

UV unwrapping is relatively easy.
You could mark all seams and have a jigsaw of separate faces to use I suppose! But it is far easier to position an unwrapped shape over a texture to line up the pattern, wood grain etc.

Think of making a dress from a paper pattern. That is basically what it is. You could make it out of a large number of little patches or the usual bigger shapes like in your image.

This has something to do with the way the final image is rendered. And how each face got its piece of the texture. If all faces are unwrapped individually, then the face render-math, at those edges becomes unstable (glitches). The seams will become visible less or more.

This is also the reason when using the paint option to have some ‘bleeding’ outside the UVMap area. And also the reason to have your UV map islands are a bit away (margin) from each other.

Basically, we want fewer seams and at unseen places of our model.

So your idea is good, but the maths in working with UV map coordinates and 3D models is a heavy math problem. Especially at the borders (edges).

Ah ha! I see what you’re saying - and - that is a very good way to look at it, I’m just a bit bored of doing it - I’ve been working on my art for 26 hours straight, super fun but I want to get on to baking again - and - do it right this time, lol xxx jess

Thanks for the explanation, I’m just super bored of un-wrapping - I’ve been at it for 26 hours, should really stop, but it’s so addictive, but I do want to get it done and move on to baking and maybe get it right this time, lol xxx jess

You say UV unwrapping is relatively easy, – but I’ve found it to be problematic – it’s a balance between the number of islands and the seams you mark.I’m finding it quite hard, xxx jess

Where can I see some of your art works? Would love to see, xxx jess

It is!
There are people who do this as a profession.

Dotted about here and there. lol You would have to look through my topic starting in my profile I guess to hunt stuff down. I am not very prolific, stuff gets started then left off for something else rather too often.

I’ll have a look out for you, xxx jess
