How do I seperate the faces in this case

I do not know why this happened, I want to close the edge loop so I can work with understandable geometry.

I have tried edge loop and cut but that is not working because it only works on the complete object not 2 faces. I have tried to extrude the vertices but it just lays them on top of the face.

Subdivide the edge, delete the 2 faces and join the vertices with f, then make new faces with f.
