When I unwrap something again in Blender, the UV changes to scale back in the 0 to 1 UV space, and I want to keep the size of my tile to preserve the texel density compared to other objects. How do I go about this?

UV toolset is quite a bit limited… I’m not sure you can do that easily without some add ons (some are listed here WIKI - Free Blender-related tools and addons).
The one thing that comes to mind is not to unwrap whole object each time. Which is rather not a good workflow… or do the scaling of island as the last step of the process… which isn’t ideal also…

My practical advice would be, to start UV-Unwrapping as your model is ready!
I know this is a hard thing to do because you are in a learning process.
Going forth in the lessons changes the model with new insights.
But there is also the UV-map scaling option. And I think (not sure) you can pin islands?
