I must have a different version of Blender, because I do not have a surface option in my preferences tool bar.
I’m running Blender V. 2.78

Try switching to Cycles render on the top tool bar. I am not sure what you are trying to do, so I am merely guessing. If that do not help, can you provide more specifics what are you trying to do?

yep thats it ( for me ) … had the same problem … thx for reminder to be in the right tabs … cycles render . i hope it did fix your problem also Jeff.
