I realized today that in order to put more work into Work: The Game, I’ll need to finish more of my GameDev lessons.
I decided to copy my workbook file and make a separate Finish It workbook for Block Breaker to help stay on track.
The Block Breaker lessons have a lot of things that I will need to finish my Work: The Game project so I decided it would be best to make another workbook and make my way through that.
Today I learned about Polygon colliders, and I also learned how to load scenes using a string reference instead of the scene index.
Loading scenes by string reference might be the best way to control the flow of Work: The Game because of the nature of the story and the way the game is intended to be played. I understand that this might not be best for most games, but I think it will be better for this story-type game.
The Block Breaker lessons also show how to add sound into a game, and while I have done that in previous game lesson projects, all of my projects have been lost and I was out of Unity and C# for close to a year, so I’ve forgotten nearly everything that I learned from Project Boost, Argon Assault, etc…
One of the biggest motivations that I have for finishing this particular project is to be able to add it to my itch.io account as a portfolio piece. I recently realized that I had lost close to fifteen projects and had nothing at all to show for it. Even if I had posted the bare student projects to my itch.io account, that would have been a decent portfolio and I may have been able to at least get an interview as a Unity developer based on those.
As it stands, I’ve got an interview on Monday for a field service job repairing forklifts. The money and the benefits will be good, but my heart just isn’t into it. I don’t want to wake up early to be there at 6 am. I don’t want to travel to battery factories and frozen pizza plants to turn wrenches on forklifts, but that’s the kind of stuff for which I’m qualified. I don’t want to wear steel toes and a hard-hat every day, etc…
The benefits are good, and they pay weekly, so I’m hoping to make the best of it while I continue to build my Unity portfolio in my spare time.
My goal is to finish the old 2D course and then move on to another course. I have several different GameDev courses in my account. A few of them are about 1/2 way complete while others are around 10% or less. I just want to focus on this 2D course for now and Finish It! (no pun intended).
Here’s the re-write for my High Level Why sheet for my Block Breaker course.
