Help! Subtract sculpting creating too many triangles

I’m subtract sculpting the mouth and nose just like Michael is at 6 and a half minutes in. My triangle count is going up thousands whilst his went up maybe 1,500. I doubled my triangle count adding just part of the mouth. Also his subtraction is deeper. Is there an option that keeps the new geometry down? Or could it have something to do with my topology in the nose area being different?

My Sculpt Settings (Blender 2.79):

  • Brush = SculptDraw
  • Radius = 16px
  • Strength = .535
  • Autosmooth = 0
  • Area Plane
  • Subtract
  • Dynotopo
  • Detail Size: 12px
  • Mirror X

I think just playing around with some settings could help you get the hang of it.

Increasing the strength will get the deeper sculpt and in the mesh for less tris.

The further you zoom out, the less tris you create.

So,

  1. increase brush strength (shift+F),
  2. zoom out a little bit and…
  3. reduce radius (F) to affect a smaller area.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the tips Mark! I think zooming out will help.
