Ok, so I know myself and go straight for the highest quality possible failing miserably in the end and give up.
Therefor I decided to follow Grant’s design and make it a little bit my own.

And yes, stick to the plan.
Learn the stuff and more from Grant, then apply it to your model (in your head) …
… but draw it on paper, front side, it will help box out the model.
Don’t fall into details, but gradually build the model up.

I really have to start making concepts myself as reference yes. First, you can use them however you like without having issues over copyrights and all that, second, you will have your own style in the end.
I know it’s hard to start at first, but i guess just as with Blender, once you get the hang of it, it will be easy to pop out some nice concepts for what you want to make.
