Wouldn’t it be simpler to use the inset tool on the edges and then to extrude the result? Does that mess with something down the line. It seems quite a bit simpler.

Hi, yes there are some smarter ways to do things.
But sometimes the teacher chooses a path to explain things in a different way.
Not all users do have the same starting knowledge and the courses are designed to incrementally increase the difficulty. Having fun at the start of a course is the most important part. But some students have more knowledge and see opportunities to improve the creative build process.
I would say, go at it. If you can think of a better way, try it out. We are learning here!
